A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
